También conocido como “Príncipe  entre los monumentos emeritenses”, el Teatro fue construido por orden del cónsul Marco Agripa e inaugurado los años 16 a 15 a.C. en la ciudad romana de Emerita Augusta. Tras su abandono propiciado por el cristianismo también fue conocido a nivel popular por "Las Siete Sillas",  ya que se decía que era donde se sentaron diversos reyes moros para decidir los destinos de la ciudad.

Está formado por un graderío semicircular o cávea (con capacidad en su momento de hasta 6.000 espectadores y para 3.000 en la actualidad), la Orchestra (donde se situaba el coro y que está pavimentada por losas de mármol) y el escenario o  pulpitum y su frontal (formado por dos cuerpos de columnas con esculturas entre los espacios, se trata de la parte más espectacular).

Situado en el conjunto arqueológico de Mérida fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1993 por la UNESCO.

El camino de tierra de los alrededores tiene tramos con diversas irregularidades que pueden crear dificultad a causa de grandes piedras embaldosadas y sus escalones.  De hecho para un usuario de silla de ruedas le resultará casi inaccesible recorrer el graderío, pudiendo entrar sólo al escenario por un camino lateral con cierto desnivel.
